Ingredients

Base

  • 6 tbspMilo powder
  • 150 mlhot water
  • 3 tbspcondensed milk, or 3 tbsp evaporated milk with sugar

To finish

  • ice cubes
  • 3 tbspMilo powder, undissolved, for the top

Optional

  • a scoop of vanilla ice cream, for a Milo Godzilla

Directions

  1. Use hot water for the base, not cold. Milo does not dissolve properly in cold liquid and you get gritty lumps through the drink.
  2. Stir in the condensed milk while the base is still hot.
  3. Taste the base and make it slightly stronger and sweeter than you want the finished drink. Over-season the base deliberately, because the ice will dilute it considerably as you drink.
  4. Let the base cool for a few minutes so it does not melt all the ice at once.
  5. Fill a tall glass to the top with ice.
  6. Pour the Milo base over the ice. Now spoon the remaining 3 tablespoons of Milo powder over the surface, dry, in a heap.
  7. Serve immediately with both a straw and a long spoon. It was created at Singapore’s mamak and twenty-four-hour stalls and it spread across Malaysia, where the name is used identically.

Technique

  • It is sweet by design and asking for less condensed milk is normal.
  • The powder heap goes soggy within a few minutes, so it is drunk fast.
  • Malaysian and Singaporean versions are essentially identical.

Substitutions

  • Any malted chocolate drink powder, though the flavour differs noticeably.
  • Evaporated milk with sugar in place of condensed milk.

Variations

  • Milo Godzilla, with ice cream.
  • Milo Volcano, with chocolate syrup.
  • Made hot, as Milo panas, without the ice.

History

Iced Milo heaped with undissolved Milo powder, created at Singapore’s mamak and 24-hour stalls and copied across Malaysia.
